LPHS Dance Class Field Trip:
“Complexions Contemporary Ballet” Matinee Performance
Tuesday, November 8th 2011 at Kingsbury Hall in SLC

This Performance:
Junior high and high school students are invited to attend Complexions Contemporary Ballet’s student matinee.

"Cross-cultural ballet with attitude. . .wearing toe shoes has never looked like so much fun." —Washington Post

Founded by former Alvin Ailey stars Dwight Roden and Desmond Richardson, Complexions Contemporary Ballet proudly transcends the boundaries of traditional dance, celebrating different styles, cultures, and music to entertain and engage audiences. Don’t miss Richardson, "one of the great modern dancers of his time" according to The New York Times, in his farewell tour!

Graded Assignment: Concert Critique (50 points)
It is a required graded assignment for students in Dance 1, 2, 3 and PDC to attend one university or professional level modern dance concert a semester and write a critique on it.  There are only a couple approved performances available, do not leave it until the last minute at the end of the semester!  This concert performance is approved to count towards the concert report assignment.

Through attending and viewing artistic concert dance, students are able to see professional dancers and professional choreography, thus enhancing their perception, understanding, and appreciation of dance.   Students see new possibilities for dance and what to aspire to when dancing, performing, and choreographing themselves.  There is so much that can be learned through watching.

Cost: $3
These professional concerts usually range from $20-$50 and we, as a school, have the great opportunity to see such companies at a reduced, or even free rate!  There is a minimal transportation charge for the bus at only $5.

Schedule:  Students are “School Excused” from A1 (at 8:30am) - A3
8:30 am                                    -Meet at front of school to load bus

approx 12:00-12:30 pm            -Arrive back at Lp, go directly to your A4 class

To Attend:
Please come with us to see the performance dressed nice.  Students must travel with us on the bus to and from the concert.   Bring your lunch to eat on the bus on the way home.  Bring pen/pencil and paper. All school rules apply.

Mrs. Di Lello MUST have the payment receipt and attached permission slip signed by a parent/guardian in order to reserve your seat at this performance, as seating is limited.   Please pay money to Lone Peak High School, re: PDC Workshops / Fieldtrips account.   Due: Thursday Nov 3rd 2011

Shakespeare Festival!

Congratulations to Lone Peak High School's Shakespeare Team!

Both Drama (and techies) and Dance did amazing!  We are all so proud of you!

It was a fun experience learning about and applying our knowledge of Shakespeare along with our performing arts.  There were individual rounds for drama competitions, and there were ensemble competitions.

In dance Nyahka Greer (PDC Vice Pres.) choreographed a lovely piece from a short quote from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" about a poet's pen creating images to shapes and turning them to airy nothings.  It was received well and we got only "nit picky" comments from the judges.  We got second place for this ensemble!

Our duo/trio category dance was a collaboration between Bradyrian Thomas, the dancers (Brooke Larson and Caleb Powell), and guidance from Mrs. Di Lello.  This duet was based upon the changing love relationship between Othello and Desdemona as Othello believes the lying whispers that she was unfaithful.  "I kissed thee er I killed thee" was an inspiring quote.  Our duet got first place!

There were only 4 dances that were invited to be showcased at the Closing Ceremony Gala: Timberline ensemble, Lehi ensemble, Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts ensemble, and Lone Peak's duet!!!!

It was said that there were over 3,000 students there at the closing awards ceremony.

Way to rock it!
Go Shakespeare!  And way to go you young creative artists/performers!

Upcoming Tests...

B1: Social Dance:  Video record dancing with your partner Thursday September 22 in class.  You will need to watch your video on my ucutips page with our secret class password and fill out a self-evaluation on ucutips as well.  Monday will be a practice day after having seen your video, and you will be tested on Wednesday.

B2: Dance 1:  We will be finishing our name letter combination in class this week.  Coming up next week we will be having a written test on "body" and "motion" as well as being video-recorded before you actually get tested on your practical skill.  I will video you on Wednesday or Friday next week.
You will be tested the following week after you have viewed your video on ucutips and completed the online self-assessment.  Remember to keep your journals up to date, as those will be graded and turned in periodically.

Some of our movement skill tests will include: plies/jumps, tendues/degages/grande battemants, across the floor locomotor movements,  improvisation on axial/locomotor movements and body part isolations/initiations, as well as our name combination.

B3: Dance 3:

B4: Performing Dance Company:  We have been working hard on our Shakespeare dances (both being student-choreographed and collaborated on... good job, since some other schools are actually paying to have professionals choreograph their dances, what a great opportunity for you!!!)  2 weeks!

We have also simultaneously been working on the Homecoming Halftime which is this Friday!

Therefore, as soon as Shakespeare is over, we will be having a mandatory big graded assignment for all PDC dancers:  "Proposals".  All dancers will propose a researched and studied topic for a piece of choreography they would like to choreograph.  When proposing, dancers can state how much they would like to choreograph the piece they are presenting for real, but not all will have the opportunity to put their proposal into fruition for this first concert.  Dancers will be graded upon their professionalism in doing the presentation, research put into the subject, 1 minute of choreography to show, creativity and originality, and clear vision of where and how the dance will progress.  Our first concert theme is "Myths and Legends", so all the proposals must be based along those lines.

Make Up Work

Hello!

It's been a whirlwind starting off school.  I hope everyone is doing well and keeping up with homework and attendance.

If not, please be sure to review the school's attendance policy and your class disclosure document in regards to absences and make up work.  Remember to complete make up work withing 2 weeks of your parent-excused absence.  Attendance school does not make up your participation points for your absence.

Make up work options can be found in the "MORE" page tab by clicking on the Make Up Work link for dance Printed "Dance Make Up Options" can be found in the dance room for you to take.  They are in the black turning paper holder on the journal shelf.

ABSENT or TARDY?  Please check in with Mrs. Di Lello if you come in late or after Mrs. Di Lello has taken roll to let her know you came in, as class may have already started.  It is your responsibility to make sure your absence is changed to a tardy by the teacher if you came in late.

Keep up your good work.
Be sure to contact me or speak with me if you have problems with your grade or attendance before it gets too late.
